October in Salt Lake City: Where Fall Magic Meets Spooky Fun

There’s something about October in Salt Lake City that just feels special. The evenings are crisp enough for a sweater, the trees trade their greens for golds and reds, and the city hums with events that bring neighbors together — from haunted houses to pumpkin patches, live theater to cozy markets. Whether you’re here for the scares, the laughs, or the cider and donuts, there’s a little something for everyone this fall.

👻 Haunted Houses & Spooky Adventures

If you’re the type who loves a good jump scare (or at least watching your friends scream), Salt Lake has no shortage of haunts:

Castle of Chaos (Sept 12–Nov 8) – Dive into a twisting underground labyrinth where every corner holds a fright. It’s earned a national reputation for a reason.

Fear Factory (Sept 12–Nov 1) – Part history, part horror, this six-story haunt comes with real ghost stories and big thrills. Book early — this one sells out fast.

Nightmare on 13th (Sept 13–Nov 7) – A Utah classic, now with brand-new immersive sets (this year’s “Horror Cinema” might just steal the show).

Daytime at Nightmare on 13th (Saturdays, Sept 13–Nov 7) – All the atmosphere, none of the jump scares — perfect for families.

Night Stalkers Haunted Trail (Sept 19–Nov 1) – Wander through haunted cornfields, spooky trails, and even a 3D nightmare zone.

🎃 Family-Friendly Fall Festivals

Not everything in October has to come with a scream — some events are all about pumpkins, hayrides, and fall magic for every age:

Pumpkin Days at Wheeler Farm (Sept 26–Oct 31) – A wagon ride, pumpkin patch, and even duck races? This one’s a fall must.

Cross-E Ranch Fall Festival (Sept 19–Nov 1) – Over 30 attractions, from pig races to corn mazes, make this one of the valley’s biggest fall gatherings.

Fright Lights (Sept 19–Nov 1) – A glowing, interactive light trail with fog bubbles and dancing monsters.

Crazy Corn Maze (Sept 19–Nov 1) – A giant maze for the brave, a mini-maze for the littles — plus games to keep everyone laughing.

Little Haunts at This Is The Place (Oct 10–31) – Trick-or-treating, pony rides, crafts, and costumes in one of the most charming settings in town.

Herriman Howl (Oct 6) – Free fun for the whole family with a pumpkin walk, costume contest (pets included!), and live music.

🎭 Theater, Music & Arts

For nights when you want culture with a side of seasonal spirit:

Witchapalooza Dinner Theater (Sept 26–Oct 29) – Comedy, music, and witches on stage (with dinner, of course).

The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 (Sept 8–Nov 15) – A hilarious mystery filled with eccentric characters and surprise twists.

The Hatmaker’s Wife (Oct 2–11) – A whimsical story about love and home, told with magic and heart.

Craftoberfest (Oct 4) – Local brews, food, music, and art — the perfect fall mash-up.

Fall Bonsai Show (Oct 4–5) – Stunning living art at Red Butte Garden.

The Addams Family (Oct 10–30) – A musical that turns everyone’s favorite spooky family upside down.

Odyssey Dance Theatre’s Thriller (Oct 13–25) – A true SLC Halloween tradition, now in its 28th year.

Garden After Dark: Trouble in Oz (Oct 16–30) – Red Butte lights up with an Oz-themed adventure.

Dear Evan Hansen (Oct 24–Nov 8) – Broadway’s Tony Award-winner arrives in Salt Lake.

Ballet West: Romeo & Juliet (Oct 24–Nov 1) – Shakespeare’s timeless love story, danced to perfection.

Utah Queer Film Festival (Oct 24–26) – A celebration of stories, voices, and community.

🛍️ Markets & Community Fun

When you’re looking for something a little lighter, Salt Lake’s markets and community events bring people together in the best way:

Downtown Farmers Market (Saturdays) – Fresh produce, baked goods, and local makers at Pioneer Park.

Pumpkin Boo-tique at Wheeler Farm (Oct 10) – Crafts, seasonal décor, and handmade treasures.

Creatures & Features Market at Tracy Aviary (Oct 11) – Halloween-themed vendors, food trucks, and even a screening of Donnie Darko.

Monster Block Party (Oct 25) – A giant, free Halloween celebration downtown — with a pumpkin drop you don’t want to miss.

Spooktacufur: Pumpkin Bash (Oct 25) – A convention full of costumes, panels, and community.

Horror Book Night (Oct 30) – Local authors gather to share their spooky new stories at The Printed Garden.

🏈 Sports & Big Nights Out

October also means game days:

Utah Utes Football (Aug 30–Nov 28) – Tailgates, rivalries, and packed stands at Rice-Eccles.

Utah Jazz (Oct 8) – NBA season tips off with all the buzzer-beater energy downtown.

Utah Mammoth Hockey (Oct 2–Apr) – Hockey is here, and the new NHL team is bringing fast-paced action to the Delta Center.

🍻 Seasonal Favorites

Because fall in Utah wouldn’t be complete without these:

Snowbird Oktoberfest (Through Oct 12) – Bavarian food, mountain views, and plenty of beer.

Not Oktoberfest at Alpine Rose (Through Oct 12) – Pies, food competitions, and small-town charm.

Yappy Hour (Oct 9) – Pups, live music, and local eats at Jordan Park.

Halloween Movies at Viridian (Oct 6–27, Mondays) – Family favorites under the stars, from Scooby-Doo to Halloweentown.

October in Salt Lake City really has it all — whether you’re chasing thrills at a haunted house, cozying up with hot cider at a festival, or spending a night out at the theater. So grab your favorite sweater (and maybe a pumpkin or two) and let the season take you where it will.
