The DIY Attic Door Cover That Stops 130°F Heat From Baking Your Home
By late August, intense UV radiation and back-to-back hot days turn your roof into a giant radiator. Dark roof shingles absorb thermal energy, driving temperatures inside your unconditioned attic up to 130°F to 140°F.
While your roof vents do their best, that massive thermal mass sits directly above your living space. The biggest culprit letting that brutal heat seep directly down into your home? Your uninsulated attic pull-down stairs or access hatch.

The Attic Heat Trap: The Unsealed Bypass
Most Salt Lake homes have 10 to 12 inches of blown-in insulation across the attic floor, but the attic hatch door itself is often just a thin 3/8-inch piece of drywall or plywood.
Uninsulated attic hatches act as a major thermal bridge:
Extreme heat radiates directly through the thin wood into upper-floor hallways and bedrooms.
Microscopic gaps around the frame allow superheated attic air to leak straight down into your living space, making your AC work twice as hard.
The Hack: Build an Insulated Attic Hatch Blanket
Install a pre-made zippered Attic Stair Insulator Cover or build a custom rigid-foam box cover to seal the access opening completely.
How to Install It Step-by-Step:
Option A: The Zip-Up Insulator Box (Fastest)
Purchase a zippered attic stair insulation cover (available at local SLC home improvement stores for around $40–$50).
Staple or staple-gun the heavy-duty foil flange down around the wooden perimeter frame inside your attic opening.
Zip it closed every time you exit the attic.
Option B: The DIY Rigid Foam Board Cap (Budget-Friendly)
Buy a single 2x4-foot sheet of 1.5-inch or 2-inch Rigid Foam Board (R-10+).
Measure your attic hatch panel and cut the foam board to match using a utility knife.
Glue the foam board directly to the top side of your attic hatch panel using construction adhesive.
Apply self-adhesive foam weatherstripping tape along the wooden lip where the hatch rests to block air leaks completely.
