Garage Doors, Don’t Fail Me Now: Winter-Ready in 5 Easy Fixes

Updated: Nov 5

Okay friends, let’s talk about that moment — the one where you head out on a chilly morning, coffee in hand, hit the garage door button... and nothing happens. Ugh. The kind of “nothing” that makes you instantly wish you’d dealt with it two weeks ago.

So before winter really sets in, let’s do a little garage and entryway checkup. It’s one of those small things that makes a huge difference when temperatures drop and mornings get hectic.

Here’s what to look at:

1. Test that garage door now (not when it’s 20 degrees).

Give the opener a run and listen for any weird sounds — creaks, grinding, that slow groan that sounds like it’s begging for help. A quick lube on the hinges and rollers goes a long way. If it’s sticking, it might just need a track cleaning or balance adjustment. Easy fix, big win.

2. Check the weather stripping.

That little rubber seal along the bottom? It’s the unsung hero keeping cold air, leaves, and mice (yep) out. If you can see daylight sneaking in underneath, it’s time for a replacement.

3. Entryway audit!

Doors get a ton of use this time of year, especially if you’re juggling coats, boots, and groceries. Make sure hinges are snug, the doormat isn’t slick, and there’s a spot for wet shoes. Bonus points if you’ve got hooks for coats and a cute little basket for hats and gloves — organization and charm.

4. Lighting matters.

It gets dark early, so double-check those bulbs over the garage and by your front door. Warm light feels cozier (and way less spooky on those long winter nights).

5. Give it a good sweep.

Leaves, salt, and dirt pile up fast. A clean entryway not only looks better, it keeps all that gunk from tracking inside.

These are the kind of quick Saturday morning fixes that future-you will be so grateful for come January — when it’s snowing sideways and everything still opens, closes, and feels cozy.

Here’s to staying warm, organized, and one step ahead of winter.

Love you, mean it.
