The “South-West Shadow” (The Blind Alignment)

Good afternoon, Salt Lake!

The June heat is officially rolling into the valley, and if you’ve spent any time driving along I-15 or walking Liberty Park in the late afternoon, you know just how intense that desert sun gets as it dips toward the Oquirrh Mountains.

By 4:00 PM, the south and west sides of our homes take a absolute beating. If you are waiting until you get home from work to close your blinds, you are already playing catch-up—your floors, walls, and furniture have already absorbed the heat, turning your home into a thermal sponge.

This Wednesday, we are deploying a zero-cost, behavioral hack to outsmart the afternoon sun.

Welcome to The "South-West Shadow."

The Problem: The Greenhouse Effect

Standard window glass acts like a magnifier for high-altitude UV rays. When that intense afternoon sun hits your south- and west-facing windows, it creates a greenhouse effect.

Many of us close our blinds but leave the slats turned downward (angling down toward the street). While this blocks the view, it actually channels the incoming sunlight downward, trapping heat right at floor level where you feel it most.

The Hack: The 45-Degree Deflection

This week’s hack is all about a simple morning habit change that alters how light enters your home.

45-degree deflection

The Wednesday Habit:

Before you head out for the day (or before you sit down at your home office desk for the afternoon), visit every window o

n the south and west sides of your property and do this:

  1. Close the Blinds Fully: Don't just leave them open.

  2. The Reverse Twist: Twist the wand so the slats angle UP toward the ceiling at a 45-degree angle (the lakeside of the slat should be higher than the street side).

The Mid-Week Win

By angling the slats upward, you force the harsh, direct valley sunlight to bounce up toward the ceiling rather than baking your floors and furniture. Since heat rises anyway, pushing the thermal energy to the highest point of the room allows your AC to capture and neutralize it much more efficiently.

It keeps your home significantly cooler throughout the brutal afternoon stretch without turning your living room into a pitch-black cave.

Have a great rest of your week, and stay cool! Check back next Wednesday for another hyper-local home hack.
