Good Day, Salt Lake! We’ve made it to the middle of the week. As the snow finally retreats to the highest peaks of the Oquirrhs and the valley starts to glow green, it’s time to shift our focus.
This week, we’re prepping for that glorious (but dusty) transition between "Heater Season" and "Open Window Season." Here are three high-impact hacks to keep your SLC property pristine and efficient this May.
1. The “Reverse Chimney” Check (Draft Defense)
We’re officially moving out of cozy fireplace weather. While you might not be thinking about your hearth until October, your chimney is currently acting as a giant straw for canyon winds and allergens.
The Hack: Perform a deep clean of the hearth, then ensure your damper is tightly closed. For an extra layer of protection, install an inflatable chimney sealer (often called a chimney balloon).
The SLC Benefit: Our famous "Canyon Winds" can create a back-draft that pulls soot smells and mountain pollen directly into your living room. Sealing the flue now keeps your indoor air fresh and prevents your AC from escaping up the pipe later this month.
2. The “Sprinkler Dry-Run” (The Zone-by-Zone Audit)
In the Salt Lake Valley, water is gold. Before the temperatures spike and you’re forced to water in the dark, do a manual "audit" of your irrigation system while the sun is still up.
The Hack: Place empty tuna cans or small containers in different spots across your lawn. Run each zone for exactly 10 minutes.
The Goal: If one can is overflowing and another is bone-dry, you’ve got a clogged nozzle or a head that’s been knocked off-kilter by winter frost heaving. Straighten them out now to avoid those dreaded "brown spots" in June.
3. The “Threshold Threshold” (The Wax Barrier)
May in Utah means one thing: The Yellow Dust. Pollen and desert dust love to settle in the grooves of your window tracks and door frames, making everything look gritty.
The Hack: After a good scrub with a stiff brush, apply a very thin coat of automotive paste wax to your exterior windowsills and metal door thresholds.
The Result: Much like a Rain-X treatment for your car, the wax creates a slick surface that prevents pollen and dust from bonding to the frame. The next spring rain will wash the dirt right off, keeping your home "showing ready" with half the effort.
Pro Tip: If you’re planning on listing your home soon, these small maintenance hacks are exactly what home inspectors look for to see if a house has been "well-loved."
Happy Hump Day! Check back next week for more tips on keeping your Wasatch front property in peak condition.
